A courageous Indiana deputy received a special honor this week for his terrifying encounter with a squirrel.

Deputy David Wheatley was conducting a welfare check on an older woman at a trailer park when the incident occurred.

Officers responded to the park after the woman called to report that a squirrel forcibly entered her trailer, ran up her leg, and viciously scratched her face.

After a brief pursuit, officers briefly captured the squirrel before the ill-tempered, medium-sized rodent attacked Deputy Wheatley.

Video posted to Harrison County Sheriff Nick Smith’s Facebook page shows the horrifying moment when the attack occurred:

Deputy Wheatley was given a bronzed squirrel and a martial arts award for his bravery.

The squirrel remains ‘at large,’ according to Sheriff Smith.
