‘Mob Mentality’ Stalling Indiana Data Centers
The growing political hysteria stalling artificial intelligence data centers across Indiana is “madness” and a direct threat to American national security, Tony Katz warned, torching anti-growth pushback that risks handing global tech dominance straight to Beijing.
While local opposition and county-level moratoriums crop up across the state, Katz pointed to reports revealing that foreign adversaries are actively fueling anti-AI sentiment in the United States to choke off domestic infrastructure.
“China is working overtime to push anti-AI data center sentiment so they won’t be built here, so they can be built in China,” Katz said. “This is a national security issue. The mob mentality isn’t helping us. It’s destructive.”
Instead of knee-jerk bans, Katz argued Hoosier communities should leverage data center projects to secure infrastructure perks on their own terms. Rather than straining local grids, operators can be mandated to supply their own power generation—and even kick back excess energy into surrounding communities.
He also dismantled environmental talking points claiming cooling systems will drain local waterways, noting modern facilities rely on closed-loop systems.
“It’s not going to dry out the Wabash. It’s just not true,” Katz noted.
Katz took aim at local officials who dismiss the high-tech economic windfall, contrasting progressive urban mismanagement with short-sighted conservative resistance. He singled out Marion County leadership for obsessing over ideological fights while basic services decay.
“You want potholes and criminals not being prosecuted. We hear you. We see you,” Katz quipped. “It’s a stupid way to be. It’s a way of ignorance and destruction and failure.”
At the same time, Katz had blunt words for what he called “dirt road Republicans”—reactionaries on the political right who reject forward-looking investment outright.
“They lack vision. They lack strength,” Katz said. “Indiana business will suffer and Hoosiers will suffer because others won’t have the issues. We can do it smarter. We can do it better. We can make demands that are best for Hoosiers.”
Katz warned that local moratoriums are traps that rarely get lifted once enacted, leaving the state in the economic dust while global competitors accelerate.
“You can have rules, but you can’t deny what’s coming,” Katz said. “It’s us or China. The end.”
