Where’s Beau? Democrat Secretary of State Candidate Ducks WIBC Interview Requests While Doing National TV
Tony Katz has a simple question for Indiana Democrat Secretary of State candidate Beau Bayh’s campaign — well, technically for Beau — and he’s not getting an answer. Radio silence, in fact, from a candidate who apparently has plenty of time for national television but none for Central Indiana voters.
Katz has now hosted the independent Lincoln Party candidate Greg Ballard, the Libertarian candidate Lauri Shillings, and Republican candidate Max Engling on his show. The Democrat in the race? Nothing. Not a response, not an auto-reply, not even a “got your email.”
“Bobie has the capacity to go on national television,” Katz said, pointing out the candidate is doing interviews — just not with WIBC. “Sadly that happens where Democrats don’t come on the show,” he added, before quickly shutting down the idea that his interviewing style is the problem. “In my interviewing, I am in any way preferential — that just doesn’t exist. There is no argument that can be made,” he said, noting he’s been “absolutely harsh, forceful with Republicans” too.
Producer Karl backed him up, confirming he’s reached out through the campaign’s website contact form multiple times and via X, with zero reply — not even an acknowledgment that the message landed.
Katz laid out the options bluntly: either the campaign has “a very bad website” with nobody monitoring it, or they’re simply not interested in the Indianapolis audience — likely, he argued, because the campaign thinks it already has Central Indiana “made in the shade.”
That’s a risky bet, Katz noted, especially with Ballard actively courting independent voters in the same media market. “I don’t know why you wouldn’t do the interview,” he said. “Just say no, say we absolutely don’t want to talk to you.” At least that would be an answer.
Katz drew an unflattering comparison to Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett’s much-mocked avoidance strategy, warning the campaign is “going full Joe Hogsett” — a path he described as ending in political flip-flops and a face-plant. His counteroffer: a full hour sit-down, or, if that’s too much, “six minutes, maybe we’ll start there.”
By contrast, Katz gave credit to Ballard’s campaign staffer for being responsive even when declining — “quick, was responsive, was appreciated,” he said, suggesting the Democrat’s team could learn something.
For now, the invitation stands, and so does the silence.
