Democrats Are Losing The DSA Fight From Within — and Tony Katz Says the Party Can’t Escape It
Democrats can distance themselves from the Democratic Socialists of America all they want. According to Tony Katz, they’ve already let the vampire in the house — and now they’re stuck with the mess.
“You never allow the vampire into the house because once you do, they’re not leaving until everything’s a bloody mass,” Katz said on 93 WIBC, invoking Buffy the Vampire Slayer to describe the DSA’s grip on Democratic politics. “This is who they are, communist vampires.”
The comment came after the DSA publicly celebrated the 100th birthday of Fidel Castro this week — a “celebratory” tribute, in Katz’s words, from a group that also branded Sen. Marco Rubio a “genocidal” figure. Katz didn’t hedge on what that makes them. “These people are liars, as we have always said,” he said. “Anybody who supports them is supporting a liar. It’s gross and it’s obscene.”
Katz pointed to this week’s election results as proof the party is split down the middle on how to handle its socialist flank. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., beat back a DSA-backed primary challenger, Oliver Larkin, prompting Moskowitz to argue voters simply “want normalcy.” Katz agreed — up to a point. “There are places where the DSA loses,” he said, crediting Moskowitz’s win and predicting Republican Ashley Moody will beat the DSA-aligned ticket in Florida’s Senate race for the same reason.
But elsewhere, the DSA is winning outright. Angie Nixon knocked off Alexander Vindman despite Vindman’s $16 million war chest, running, as Katz put it, on a message of “who likes free crap.” Translation: the socialist brand is spreading, not shrinking.
Katz also flagged a letter circulating among Jewish Democrats in Michigan urging support for Republican Mike Rogers over Abdul El-Sayed, whom the letter’s authors say “absolutely cannot be trusted” on Israel. Katz didn’t soften that one either. “They think Abdul El-Sayed is a threat to their very existence, because he is,” he said. “But don’t worry, I think all these DSA commies are a threat to our existence — because they are.”
His bottom line: Democratic leadership can’t have it both ways. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren keep handing the DSA “full-throated endorsements,” Katz said, while rank-and-file voters who reject Trump are quietly refusing to go along with the socialist wing — voting Democrat anyway, just to avoid the alternative. “There is a level of pushback taking place,” Katz said. “It is not as great as the acceptance.”
