Southport Police Officer Faces Charges After Using Scare Tactic Against Son
INDIANAPOLIS — An officer with the Southport Police Department has been arrested after a month-long investigation.
Timothy Hayes, Jr., 37, of Franklin, faces charges of Criminal Confinement and Neglect of a Dependent, after using his position as an officer for a scare tactic against his teenage son.
Indiana State Police say the investigation started when a staff member at Franklin Community High School learned of a situation involving a 15-year-old student. The Department of Child Services was contacted, then the Franklin Police Department. The case was then turned over to State Police.
Investigators say Hayes handcuffed his son and left him unattended in the holding area at the Southport Police Department for more than a half-hour. He then kept the boy handcuffed and drove him to the Adult Processing Center for the Marion County Jail.
Hayes turned himself in on Tuesday morning. He’s been placed on administrative leave.
