Snowy Indy

INDIANAPOLIS — Snow squalls will move across Indiana Wednesday afternoon, creating near whiteout conditions, according to the National Weather Service. The snow will begin in Western Indiana and spread east, with wind chills tonight dropping temperatures into the teens.

“The accumulation itself is not the main story,” said Mike Ryan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. “With the wind and heavier bursts of snow over short periods, that will create the impact, not necessarily the accumulation.”

Ryan warned that winds will gust over 40 mph, blowing snow sideways and quickly covering roads, making travel difficult.

“Slow down, allow extra time, and keep extra distance between vehicles,” Ryan said. “Lowering your speeds will make you better prepared to handle the snow showers.”

The snow is expected to last 6-7 hours, ending around 8 p.m. Temperatures will plummet overnight into the teens, with subzero wind chills possible north of Indianapolis.

“It will turn very cold tonight with lows in the teens,” Ryan said. “With the winds continuing, wind chills will dip near zero, possibly below zero north of the city.”

Cold temperatures are expected to persist on Thurson day, with light snow or rain possibly.
