Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has proclaimed November 7th “Victims of Communism” day in his home state.

“Victims of Communism Day” will require Florida high school students enrolled in US government courses to get at least a 45 minute seminar to learn about those who suffered under Communist power through poverty, violence, and suppression. The course will be taught every November 7th.

DeSantis says the new bill will seek to combat a “tremendous ignorance” among young Americans about these regimes.

The legislation was signed Monday at the Freedom Tower in Miami. The Freedom Tower is where historically 650,000 Cubans were processed in 1959 after fleeing their homeland when Fidel Castro took power.

The new law will also allocate $25 million to renovate the Freedom Tower.
