COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus Police are looking for the driver who crashed a stolen car into a police cruiser Thursday morning.

According to CPD, officers were called just before 7 a.m. to investigate reports of someone knocking on doors at the Brookside Court apartment complex.

An officer found a suspicious Volkswagen Jetta in the area and asked to speak with the driver. When the driver stepped out of the car, the passenger got into the driver’s seat and took off, said CPD.

The suspect crashed into an unoccupied police cruiser moments later and then drove away.

Officers tracked the stolen Volkswagen and followed it north on Jonesville Road. A short chase happened, said police, but officers called it off due to heavy morning traffic.

CPD is looking for the driver and the vehicle. The vehicle is described as a silver Volkswagen Jetta with heavy front-end damage.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Columbus Police Department at 812-376-2600.
