As the Colts enter the weekend with still no idea who will be their starting quarterback when the 2022 regular season kicks off in September, one name keeps getting mentioned across NFL circles and that name is Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.  The soon-to-be 37-year old figures to be on the trading block if the Falcons acquire Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans.  Ryan carries a massive cap hit, one Atlanta will have to eat the majority of, but if it means they acquire Watson I’m sure it will be a pill they’d be happy to swallow.

For the Colts, it isn’t the most ideal situation.  Another aging quarterback who offers a short-term solution to the most important position in sports.  Colts fans have been there and done that.  Ryan is due a roster bonus, which has seen been pushed back through this weekend in hopes that Watson will make a decision and a trade can be worked out.  If that happens, expect the Matt Ryan domino to fall quickly as the Falcons don’t want to be on the hook for the additional $7.5 million.  He could be had via trade and consider the ticking clock the Falcons will face, it may not cost as much as it would under different circumstances.
Could the Colts pounce?  Or will they continue to wait patiently as the quarterback market still figures itself out?  It’s a hot topic that was debated on Kevin & Query this morning.  It’s not an ideal situation and one that seems more like a lateral move to Carson Wentz or Philip Rivers than an actual upgrade but this is the hand the Colts have dealt themselves by refusing to find long-term solutions at the position.
