North Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia are just a few of a handful of states that are experiencing a “gas shortage.” Drivers can’t find gas stations with enough supply for their vehicles, so why is there no gas?

Last weekend a 5,500 mile pipeline system, the Colonial Pipeline Co. closed its pipeline after a cyberattack by a Russian group. The pipeline transports more than 100 million gallons of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and heating oil per day between the Gulf Coast and the New York metro area.

The FBI confirmed the cyberattack was initiated by a ransomware Russian gang known as “Darkside.” The group hacks into servers, encrypts them, and then demands a ransom from the victim to not leak the potentially sensitive information.

Darkside has reportedly stolen documents from more than 80 companies in the US and Europe.

The Georgia-based Colonial Pipeline is the latest target of the group. Until the issue is resolved the pipeline has shutdown, which brings us to the gas shortage on the east coast. The company says they are aiming to substantially restore its system by the end of the week.

GasBuddy announced the national average price of gas has gone passed the $3/gallon mark due to the system shutdown. Gas prices have not been seen this high since 2014.
