WASHINGTON — President Trump and many members of Congress are calling for China and the World Health Organization to be honest about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on a global scale.

“In order to wage this fight most effectively we need to have transparency,” said Sen. Todd Young (R-IN). “We need transparency from the Chinese government, we need transparency from the World Health Organization. So far, we have received neither.”

Young said transparency from all fronts is needed to come up with vaccines and treatments for COVID-19 as quickly as possible.

“Instead, the Chinese government has ramped up propaganda efforts,” Young continued. “In fact, they have kicked out journalists and silenced doctors and researchers that can testify as to what happened on the ground.”

Young called the fight against coronavirus a “global fight” and in order to keep up the fight, the world needs clarity. He hopes to get that clarity through congressional hearings.

Young is calling on Dr. Tedros Adhanom, the executive director of the World Health Organization, to testify before his sub-committee within the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“As the largest dues-paying member nation, I think it’s very important that Dr. Tedros appear before my sub-committee and answer some very probing questions,” Young said.

It’s not clear if Adhanom will appear.
