UPDATE: Monday, Dec. 2.

INDIANAPOLIS — Citizens Energy has announced that the closure of two blocks of Illinois Street in downtown Indianapolis will begin on Monday, December 9.

INDIANAPOLIS — Two blocks of Illinois Street in downtown Indy will close in early December for about eight months of tunnel work.

Illinois Street will close between McCarty and South Streets on or after Dec. 2 and will remain closed until at least July, said Citizens Energy Group.

Through traffic will be redirected to Madison Ave. at McCarty Street, according to Citizens Energy. Drivers can re-access Illinois Street by traveling west on South Street.

During the closure, Citizens will work on the Lower Pogue’s Run Tunnel, which is part of the DigIndy Tunnel System.

The DigIndy Tunnel System is a 28-mile network of tunnels that will nearly eliminate sewer overflows in Marion County, according to Citizens Energy. It is expected to be completed in 2025.
