INDIANAPOLIS — Immigrant rights advocates rallied at the Indiana Statehouse on Thursday, protesting what they call anti-immigrant legislation.
The Indiana Latino Democratic Caucus opposes more than 15 bills, including House Bill 1393 and House Bill 1531, which they say could harm immigrant communities.
HB 1393 would require law enforcement to notify county sheriffs when arresting someone suspected of being undocumented. HB 1531 would allow the attorney general to penalize government entities that don’t comply with federal immigration authorities and impose fines on employers hiring undocumented workers.
“Immigration is a federal issue,” Carolina Castoreno of the Indiana Latino Democratic Caucus told WISH-TV. “States and local authorities shouldn’t be involved.”
The protest followed a viral video showing ICE agents detaining two Honduran men in Indianapolis.
