IOWA CITY, Iowa. — Caitlin Clark left the University of Iowa as college basketball’s all-time leading scorer.
She also set records for most 3-point baskets made and the number of overall field goals made, all while leading the Iowa Hawkeyes to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Women’s National Championship game.
All this is certainly more than enough reason for one to have their jersey number retired.
Caitlin Clark, who was drafted by the Indiana Fever in 2024, was back at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday in front of a packed house to watch her alma mater take on 4th-ranked Southern California. While the Hawkeye’s upsetting the Trojans 76-69 was a story in and of itself, the day belonged to Clark.
After seeing her number raised into the rafter of Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Clark said her accomplishments at Iowa are more than just hers.
“I think it speaks to the culture of this place, so selfless,” she said to the crowd. “I know my number is up there, but it wouldn’t be if it wasn’t for all of you.”
Clark took the time to also thank her new team in the Indiana Fever for drafting her. She said the Fever are a franchise with many similarities to the University of Iowa.
“I couldn’t imagine getting drafted to a better franchise,” Clark said. “A place that, just like Iowa, invests in women’s sports and has allowed me to thrive. So, I’m super lucky to be there.”
Clark was the WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2024 and was fifth in the voting for Most Valuable Player. It’s the first time ever a player has been voted Rookie of the Year and been top five in MVP voting.
