What State Police Want You to Know About this Weekend’s Snow

STATEWIDE-State Police troopers all over Indiana are getting ready for Sunday’s potential snow storm.

Kevin Getz is a State Police Sergeant from the Bloomington district. He says both he and many other troopers will be out on patrol both Sunday and Monday.

“There is State Road 46, State Road 37, and obviously I-69. We are going to have troopers that are assigned to patrol those roadways,” said Getz.

Getz said any abandoned or parked cars that could impede INDOT’s snow or ice removal will be removed before the arrival of inclement weather. He says if there are a lot of calls about crashes or slideoffs coming in at once, they’ll have to prioritize people in the most danger.

“An emphasis is going to be taking care of those vehicles that are involved in a crash. If that means somebody’s vehicle slides off and it’s 24 to 36 hours before we get to it, then that’s what’s going to have to happen. We’re going to have maximum effort from the Bloomington district with regards to extra patrols,” said Getz.

All of that is why he’s urging you not to put yourself in a compromising position.

“If you don’t have to be out, don’t,” said Getz.

Getz and the rest of the Bloomington District are offering the following advice:

-Approach bridges and overpasses with extreme caution as they typically freeze first.

-Allow for increased stopping distances especially when approaching traffic control devices such as lights and stop signs.

-Maintain a full tank of fuel or full EV charge.

-Maintain a full cell phone charge. Keep a charge cord in your vehicle.

-Keep your vehicle stocked with appropriate winter emergency gear/clothing.
