MARION COUNTY, Ind. — They met for a gun trade, and it ended with a fatal shooting. Now, one of the men involved has been convicted.
Tremayne Hobson Jr. was convicted of murder and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury last week for his role in the 2021 fatal shooting of Dusty Lawrence, says the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
Lawrence had been messaging Demetrius Coakley over Discord, a messaging and social media app, leading up to the afternoon of March 28th, 2021. The men agreed to meet for a gun trade on Newcastle Drive. The location was close to Tremayne Hobson’s home, as police later learned.
Lawrence, his wife, and five-year-old daughter arrived. Lawrence got out of the car with his gun case and was shot minutes later. He later passed away from his injuries.
Since then, detectives learned Hobson and Coakley planned to rob Lawrence of his gun, but the situation went south and Lawrence was shot.
One piece of evidence police were able to pin on Hobson was clothing found in his home through a search warrant. The clothing matched the suspect’s appearance from that day.
“The complete lack of regulation when it comes to gun sales and trades in our state puts people in unnecessary danger,” said Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears in a Saturday press release, “what should have been a straightforward transaction resulted in an absolute tragedy.”
Demetrius Coakley is also facing charges. Sentencing is up next for Tremayne Hobson Jr.
