An illegal immigrant from Guatemala has been charged in the rape of a 10-year-old Ohio girl.

The Columbus Dispatch first reported that 27-year-old Gerson Fuentes was arrested after police said he confessed to raping the child on multiple occasions.

Fox News is reporting that Fuentes is a Guatemalan national in the country illegally. ICE has placed a detainer request on Fuentes that he be handed over to the agency for removal proceedings.

The story of the 10-year-old’s rape was initially published in the Indianapolis Star in the context of the victim reportedly having to cross state lines to Indiana to get an abortion due to the state’s laws. It was cited by proponents of abortion access, who highlighted it as a tragic consequence of limits to abortion access at the Federal level.

President Biden referenced the story in a speech last week announcing measures to protect abortion access in the wake of the recent Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

“Ten years old.  Raped, six weeks pregnant. Already traumatized. Was forced to travel to another state. Imagine being that little girl,” Biden said.

The original story was relayed by Indianapolis OB-GYN Dr. Caitlin Bernard, who said the rape victim was six weeks and three days pregnant, making it too late for her to receive abortion care under Ohio’s restrictive abortion law triggered by the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision.
