Beep beep beep Ah, the sound of a public reverse rings once again.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has been open about his favoritism towards mileage tax, which would charge people based on how many miles they drive.
During a CNBC interview Friday Buttigieg even indicated a strong possibility of gas and mileage tax being included in the President’s multi-trillion dollar infrastructure plan.
“I think that it shows a lot of promise, If we believe in that so-called user pays principle, the idea that part of how we pay for roads is you pay based on how much you drive. The gas tax used to be the obvious way to do it — it’s not anymore, so a so-called vehicle-miles-traveled tax or mileage tax, whatever you want to call it, could be a way to do it.”
However, when he joined Jake Tapper on CNN Monday, he started to back pedal when asked about the mileage tax in the plan.
“No, that’s not part of the conversation about this infrastructure. I just want to make sure that is very clear, but you will be hearing a lot more details in the coming days about how we envision being able to fund this.”
Tony Katz wonders why it’s not part of the plan and why all the sudden his confidence in the tax has changed.
Is it possible that you learned how absolutely unpopular and criminally insane this all is and your like ‘hey maybe I want to run for president in the future. I don’t want to be the guy that says hey let’s have a mileage tax.’
There is no question this is being back pedaled as described. Now why? That’s a good question. I want to see whether or not we are about to see if something snuck in there.
We don’t have any solid answer as to ‘why’ Buttigieg moon walked on his own idea, but it is apparent it will not be a part of the infrastructure plan.
Biden’s infrastructure plan will be fully announced Wednesday.
