UNION COUNTY, Ind. — A Union County woman is dead after being shot by an officer during a struggle with police.

Early Friday morning, the Union County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call about a woman standing in the middle of US 27 south of Liberty, according to Indiana State Police.

Liberty Police Officer Lorenzo Shepler arrived and observed Maggie Dickerson, 29, of Liberty, standing in the road. When he approached Dickerson and attempted to move her out of the way, Dickerson began to resist and struggle with Shepler, said ISP.

During the struggle, Dickerson pulled out a knife. ISP said that when she approached Shepler with the knife, Shepler fired his duty weapon multiple times, hitting Dickerson at least once.

Dickerson was flown to a hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Officer Shepler, a two-year veteran of the Liberty Police Department, received minor injuries during the struggle. He is on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated by Indiana State Police.

Once the investigation is complete, the results will be presented to the Union County Prosecutor.
