INDIANAPOLIS — Tibbs Drive-in Theatre has been bringing the outdoor movies to families in the city of Indianapolis for decades, but now new ownership is taking over to give people the same nostalgic experience with a revamped feel.

It helps when one of the new owners, Marcella Snyder, is actually a familiar face.

“This was my first job at 14 and here I am, 20 years later, and finally owning it,” she said.

Snyder says it means a lot to finally have a chance to open after being delayed by COVID-19 for two months.

“Honestly we are so excited,” she said. “My partner and I have huge plans for the drive-in, so if you’ve never been prepare to be wowed and if you have been prepare to be wowed. We’re going to turn this into the best drive-in theater in Indiana.”

Snyder says if you haven’t been to a drive-in movie before, there’s no better time than now to try it out.

“It’s an excellent evening out for families,” she said. “It’s relatively inexpensive, we have reasonably priced food, and it’s a whole evening. You won’t need to hire a baby sitter. It’s really a nice family experience for everyone.”

Meanwhile, they’re keeping safety in mind because of the pandemic. Snyder says employees are going through “special safety training” for COVID-19.

All employees are being instructed to wear gloves and masks. She says they’ll also be monitoring the health of their employees so they can make sure no one is working while showing any signs of illness.

“It was a little scary and like everyone, we are still a little scared which is why we’re taking a lot of precautions.”

Other safety precautions Tibbs Drive-in Theatre is taking:

  • Restroom: 5 people at a time; Social distancing spots marked for waiting customers.
  • Customers encouraged to buy food using the food app: Fan Food
  • Walk-up customers buying tickets at the box office are asked to wear gloves and face masks.

“We want people to be able to have a safe enjoyable evening and we are so excited to be able to provide that for Indianapolis,” Snyder said.
