SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The athletic directors at all four high schools in South Bend will be out of a job by the end of the school year.

As part of what is being called a restructuring plan by new South Bend Community School Corporation Superintendent Todd Cummings, all athletic director positions at South Bend high schools are being terminated.

They will be replaced by what being called a “Dean of Students and Athletics. The school district says the current AD’s will be able to apply for those positions but that they will be open to outside candidates as well. The district has not said exactly why it is “restructuring.”

One athletic director told WNDU that the whole thing was “ludicrous.”

After a school board meeting last night, Cummings refused to speak to media. He instead released a statement via spokesperson saying:

“These are difficult decisions that we know affect personnel who have been of service to South Bend Schools. However, we believe this restructuring is an important step to ensure the future success of the district. We remain fully committed to athletics. New positions will provide greater support and flexibility for both athletics and academics.”
