LAWRENCE, Ind –INDIANAPOLIS — A woman is recovering after being shot by a Lawrence police officer on Sunday night.

Police say they were called just before 9 p.m. to a home on North Richardt Avenue, near East 46th Street, after someone reported seeing a woman point a gun at another person.

When officers got there, they heard noise coming from a detached garage and found a light on. They opened the garage and found a woman inside, holding a small dog in one arm and a gun in the other.

Officers say they told her several times to show her hands, but she didn’t respond. Instead, police say she shot the dog and then raised the gun toward her head and toward officers. One officer fired a single shot, hitting her in the shoulder.

The woman was taken to Methodist Hospital and was stable Monday morning.

She was later arrested on preliminary charges, including pointing a loaded gun, carrying a handgun without a license due to a prior felony, and animal cruelty.
