INDIANAPOLIS — One man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon, and Indy Metro Police believe he may have been planning a “suicide by cop.”

Police were planning to respond to a car crash outside a business on Brookville Way, but they soon learned that a “disturbance with a weapon” had also occurred at the scene.

There, they say a man was standing in a parking lot…holding a machete.

According to IMPD, an officer told the man to drop the machete multiple times, but he refused and eventually headed toward the officer.  He was taken to the hospital, but he did not survive.

The man had apparently hit an occupied vehicle before officers came to help, and when one of the two victims got out of the car, he hit her “in the head and body” with the weapon.

At this time, police think the man knew his victims prior to the attack, and that he had been waiting for them to leave work. They were later taken to the hospital in stable condition.

President Rick Snyder with the Indy FOP released a statement after the incident, in which he said, “Police officers face many types of weapons, including edged weapons, which are as deadly as any other instruments used to inflict harm.

If you know anything about this incident, you are asked to call the IMPD Homicide Office or Crime Stoppers.  The officer who fired his gun is now on administrative leave, as is standard.

Body-worn cameras were activated during the shooting.
