How to prepare for the first frost & inevitable colder temps:

There are several steps you can take to get ready. If you do one per week, you’ll be set!

  1. Garden Protection: Gather materials like blankets, sheets, or specialized frost covers to protect your plants when the frost arrives. Water your garden in the evening. Moist soil retains heat better than dry soil, helping protect plant roots.
  2. Check Your Heating System: Ensure your home heating system is working efficiently. Schedule maintenance if needed to avoid last-minute issues when temperatures drop.
  3. Stock Up on Supplies: Gather essentials like salt or sand for icy walkways.
  4. Seal Windows and Doors: Use weather stripping and caulk to seal any gaps around windows and doors to prevent drafts.
  5. Insulate Pipes: Wrap pipes in insulation to prevent freezing and bursting during extreme cold.
  6. Clean Gutters: Remove leaves and debris from gutters to prevent ice dams.
  7. Update Your Wardrobe: Locate your warm clothing, including hats, gloves, scarves, and thermal layers.
  8. Prepare Your Car: Check your car’s antifreeze levels, battery, and tire tread. Keep an emergency kit in your car, including blankets, a flashlight, and non-perishable snacks.
