CASS COUNTY, Ind. — A highway worker is in the hospital after being hit in a Cass County construction zone.

Indiana State Police say a pickup truck driven by James Paullus, of Logansport, stopped Wednesday morning after seeing Charles Davis, a highway worker who was holding a stop sign to control traffic for a work crew milling the road.

The car behind Paullus, driven by Yigermal Getachew, of Indianapolis, failed to stop and swerved, hitting the rear of Paullus’ pickup truck. Getachew’s car then continued onto the shoulder and hit Davis.

Davis was flown from the scene by helicopter to a Fort Wayne hospital. He has several broken bones but is expected to recover. Neither Paullus nor Getachew was injured.

State Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
