INDIANAPOLIS — People in Meridian-Kessler are pushing for changes after Sunday’s deadly shooting at a short-term rental, but city leaders say state law limits what the city can do right now.

Police say Brittany Members was trying to protect teenagers at her daughter’s after-prom party when someone shot and killed her after trying to get inside the house. Two other people were hurt in the shooting near 40th Street and Park Avenue.

The home was operating as an unregistered short-term rental, and now neighbors and city leaders are looking at ways to crack down on properties like it. City-County

Councilor John Barth says he’s putting together a group that includes IMPD, city code enforcement and other agencies to review how the city handles short-term rentals under current state law.

Leaders say shootings connected to short-term rentals have happened several times across Indianapolis in recent years, including multiple unsolved killings over the last year and a half.

At a public meeting Wednesday night, neighbors raised concerns about police response times and communication after people in the area called about problems before the shooting happened. Others said the larger issue is violence in the city, not just short-term rentals.

IMPD had not announced any arrests.
