Indianapolis Power Play: BlackRock Purchasing AES
Tony Katz discusses the recent news that BlackRock is purchasing AES, a company that provides electricity to Indianapolis. But this isn’t just about a business deal – it’s about the future of our city’s energy infrastructure and the role of local government in our daily lives.
Tony’s take on the situation is refreshingly honest. “I don’t know if I have a reason to be worried about BlackRock,” he says. “If there’s an argument that they’re going to be shedding people and firing people because of profit motive, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. And no one is guaranteed or owed a job.” He’s not afraid to speak his mind, and his perspective is a great starting point for our conversation.
As we dive deeper into the topic, Tony shares his concerns about the city’s ability to manage its own power company. “This city can’t even run a pothole,” he says. “The basics can’t be handled, and the civic leadership doesn’t stand up for it.” He’s not alone in his skepticism – many of us have wondered why our city can’t seem to get the basics right.

But Tony’s not just criticizing; he’s also offering a solution. “I want people who know how to run power companies running power companies,” he says. “I want to see leadership, both elected and civic, that can make that happen.” It’s a call to action that resonates with anyone who’s frustrated with the status quo.
Throughout our conversation, Tony and I touch on a range of topics, from the potential benefits of private ownership to the importance of community responsibility. We discuss the example of other cities that have successfully managed their own utilities, and the ways in which Indianapolis could learn from their experiences.
As we wrap up our conversation, Tony leaves us with a sobering reminder. “If this city wants to elect a Joe Hogsett again to another term, this city is going to get exactly what it deserves.” It’s a commentary on the importance of holding our leaders accountable, and the need for us to demand more from our civic leaders.
