Is The Property Tax Compromise The Best We Can Do?
Is the property tax compromise the best we can do? Governor Mike Braun endorsed the watered-down property tax bill on Wednesday to the chagrin of many of his voters. Considering the supermajority that the Republicans enjoy in the statehouse, passing the Governor’s primary legislative agenda should have been easy. But lawmakers quickly buckled to the expected blowback from the local municipalities. Where is the boldness of your convictions?
Tony Katz:
We have agreed upon a plan. And there will be peace in our time. Maybe we haven’t learned the lessons of appeasement. I know Governor Braun and his team are listening. They should call in this morning and explain the property tax plan to us. He’s not a guy afraid, right? And I’m not. He should call in right now, Governor Braun, because according to him, we now have a deal on property taxes. But this is not the original deal. This was the Senate bill or yeah, it’s SB 1. There was the idea, then there’s what the Senate put forward, which was a big pile of stuff. That you can’t properly describe on radio. You, you can’t. You want to. You almost feel like you need to. So, then they said, hey, here’s some kind of. Frankensteining of this thing and this this beautiful compromise is everything you ever wanted. It provides a $300.00 tax credit each year for property owners. That’s $100 more than was passed by the House Ways and Means Committee. The original plan was to reset to 2021 valuations. And that amendment passed 70 to 27. Democrats had a whole bunch of, of amendments out there. None of those went through… Do we have a deal that makes sense? And the answer is, of course not. That’s how it looks. And I would love for a Governor Braun to explain it. What I believe he would say. I’m going to, I’m going to, I’m going to shoot my shot here. Listen, politics is about what is possible, and this is what was possible. And this is going to offer real relief for Hoosiers. That’s what he’s going to say. I still want you to call in, but that’s what he’s gonna say.
