INDIANAPOLIS–Crackers Comedy Downtown is closing.

In a statement on its website and Facebook page, owner Ruth-Anne Herber said rising costs and staffing concerns primarily drove her decision.  She also mentioned the high cost of liquor license liability insurance ($500,000).

“It is with deep sadness that I must announce that Crackers Comedy is closing its doors for the time being. It has been my pleasure and honor to have served you for the last four decades. We had a fabulous winter season, and there is nothing I’m prouder of than to have brought so many great comedians to Indianapolis,” Herber wrote in the statement.

She also urged the public not to give up on comedy.

“For your future laughter needs and comedy relief, please support Helium Comedy Club along with all the open mics around town. Comedians always need an audience. They cannot do it without you,” her statement continued.

Refunds will be issued for tickets to a Patti Vasquez show and any unused gift certificates.

Herber says her future is unknown at this point but does desire to spend more time with her family.

Crackers Comedy Club was founded in 1982.
