INDIANAPOLIS — After eight years on the force, one State Police K-9 will be spending his retirement with his former handler’s family.

Apache first began working with Trooper Walter Butt in September of 2016. Just over one year later, he was shot in the line of duty in Lawrence, but was thankfully able to return to work within a few weeks.

During the course of his career, the K-9 helped officers seize hundreds of pounds of illegal drugs, search multiple schools and buildings, capture more than $1.6 million in drug money, and more.

ISP Sergeant John Perrine called Apache “an unbelievable dog.” At his retirement ceremony Tuesday, Apache received dozens of tennis balls and got his final 10-42 broadcast.

He now gets to enjoy the rest of his life as a pet with the Butt family.
