Rep Erin Houchin: It’s terrible What We’ve Seen From The Left-Wing Media
Tony Katz:
There will be an investigation from the House into the assassination attempt. On President Trump, Congresswoman Erin Houchin joins me right now from the 9th district of Indiana. She is in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention as we speak. Early morning there. Let’s before we get into things going on at the RNC. Let us talk assassination attempt. As a member of Congress, did you get different notifications when something like this happens, or did you see it on the news like everybody else?
Erin Houchin:
Actually, Tony I was having dinner with my husband at home, so I was out. I was not plugged into the phone or the television when it happened, but my phone did start going off with text messages just from friends and family who had watched it live. So, we immediately, of course, tuned in. But traditionally we do get alerts from the Capitol Police and the Sergeant at Arms when there are specific threats to us. We did not get any notification on this. However, we did get a briefing yesterday from Capitol Police and the Sergeant at Arms.
Tony Katz:
To the extent you could tell us a about that briefing, was there anything within that that has not been shared with us as to motive or other connections or other possibilities regarding others who may want to do harm to the former president or others?
Erin Houchin:
No, we didn’t have any additional information other than what’s been reported on television. However, the Speaker of the House and leadership team should be getting higher level briefings than just for the rank-and-file members. Part of it too is just added security here for us and for everyone attending the Republican National Convention. In light of the assassination attempt, we are going to demand answers. There is at least a subgroup of, of rank-and-file members, including me, who are adamant that we must get answers and that we have to lead that effort because of what we’ve seen over the last several years with some of these Biden agencies that the Republicans are going to have to lead the way in getting answers.
Tony Katz:
You’re making a bit of an argument there that you might see the political left try and delay on some level of investigation considering other delays they’ve brought in in the past. Are you hearing from Democrats in the House who you work with on a daily basis, a lack of interest in finding out what happened here and certainly whether or not there were Secret Service failings?
Erin Houchin:
We haven’t heard that, but I will say that that it’s actually terrible what we’ve seen from the left-wing media and how those headlines have been, you know, really inaccurate, calling it an incident or he, you know, Trump falls at the rally. And we’ve seen this from our own Indiana outlets, as you have noted.
Erin Houchin:
And thank you for drawing attention to all of that and the dialed-up rhetoric that we’ve seen in the last four years, yet some of the talking heads are calling for, you know, Trump to dial it down or Republicans to dial it down. Look, we don’t engage in personalities. We talk about policy policies that we disagree with. But the left. Very much including the media has gone so, so far as to even compare Donald Trump to Hitler.
Erin Houchin:
So, what I would say, Tony, is that Republicans are just going to be watching very closely as we try to get answers on this. And we’re not going to just leave it to the agencies. We are going to be engaging in our own efforts. To get to the bottom of what happened and why it happened, so that Trump or any other president is never in this situation again. It hadn’t happened for 43 years. So, it’s something that we’re going to demand answers on to that.
Tony Katz:
President Biden taken to the Oval Office yesterday talking about having to dial down the temperature. I just shared a bit of that earlier. Did you hear his full address, and do you have comment?

Erin Houchin:
I did not hear his full address. I was with some of the other members of the Indiana delegation at a place where we just couldn’t hear. I did see he was addressing, making the address that we did not, we could not hear it. So, I don’t know exactly what he said in the address, but I do know what he has said in the past, and the comparisons that were made. Look, you are right, I get it on my social media page almost daily. I’m called a fascist on social media for supporting Donald Trump, and that has been going on since I became a member of Congress. It is a scary time for many of us, but you know, look at the look at the difference in Donald Trump standing up and, and raising a fist, and just that compared to Joe Biden and, and his decline, I mean, it’s going to be a very interesting November. I pray for the president, for the families of the victims, particularly the victim that was shot and killed. This is a scary time. But what I can tell you is that President Trump is resilient. And we’re really here at the convention looking forward to seeing to seeing him and hearing from him this week and how he’s going to lead us through this because I’m certain that he will deliver a message of unity and. And we are going to get through it.
