INDIANAPOLIS–What started out as a traffic stop by IMPD turned into a police chase where a man was killed.

IMPD says their officers tried to pull over a man who was driving a stolen pickup truck around 11 pm Monday near Garfield Park on Shelby Street. That is on the south side of Indianapolis.

When they got out of their patrol cars, they said the man in the truck drove away. Investigators say he hit a median, lost control and rolled down an embankment on Madison Avenue. He was thrown out of the truck and died.

“It was an unfortunate event. The only good thing is that no innocent civilians were hurt. None of our officers were hurt,” said IMPD Nightwatch Commander Kerry Buckner. “The best bet always is to pull over. That doesn’t always happen unfortunately.”

Buckner said the chase only lasted a few minutes.

IMPD Internal Affairs is investigating the incident.
