GREENFIELD, Ind. — As construction projects, traffic jams and crashes continue to be a problem on the interstates in Indiana, one county is trying to help drivers out.
The Hancock County 911 Center has created a text alert system to alert drivers whenever there is a crash or big traffic jam on I-70.
“All day, these people are driving through this area,” says Greg Duda with the 911 Center. “I mean, you don’t have to live in Hancock County or Greenfield. If you’re just driving through, that’s fine, because what’s happening is there is so much traffic and the roads can only handle so much right now.”
If you want to sign up for the alerts, just text “I70HANCOCK” to 226787. Whenever there is a problem on the interstate, the 911 Center will text you an update.
“We know when there’s going to be something going on, whether it’s a crash, a semi that’s overheating, a disabled vehicle, whatever it might be, we’re going to know as soon as it happens,” Duda said. “The way we see it is if we send this message out and five people saw it and didn’t go on 70, that’s five less people to make a backup worse.”
