1. The Inaugural Fair (October 20–22, 1852)
Held in downtown Indianapolis’s Military Park, the first-ever fair drew an estimated 30,000 visitors paying just 20 cents. It featured agricultural prizes, domestic arts, and quirky contests like “Best False Teeth” and “Best Artificial Limbs
In 1892, the Fair moved permanently to the Indiana State Fairgrounds on East 38th Street—featuring 214 acres, 72 buildings, a 6,000‑seat grandstand, and inaugural racing event
3. Beatles Concerts (1964)
Just months after recovering, the Coliseum hosted The Beatles on their first—and only—Indiana stop, playing two sold-out shows amid the Fair grounds’ rebirth
4. Annual Band Day Launches (1947–present)
Beginning in 1947, Indiana State Fair Band Day became one of the nation’s longest-running high school marching band contests—featuring hundreds of bands in a day-long, state-wide musical tradition
5. Innovative Aviation Displays & Balloon Races
Over the 20th century, the Fair introduced dirigible and monoplane demonstrations, culminating in the first annual balloon race in 1975, amping up high-flying excitement for attendees
6. Hoosier Hundred Auto Race Debut (1953)
The Fair added motor sports with the debut of the Hoosier Hundred, a 100-mile dirt-track race that brought adrenaline-fueled competition to the Fairgrounds
7. Major Fairgrounds Renovation (2012–2014)
A $63 million overhaul modernized the Coliseum, improved youth and exhibit spaces, and rejuvenated facilities across the grounds, with updates completed in 2014
8. Record‑setting Ice Cream Eating Contest (2017)
Competitive eater Miki Sudo set a world record by devouring 16 pints of ice cream in six minutes, breaking Joey Chestnut’s previous mark and winning big prize money
9. Expansion of the Hoosier Lottery Free Stage
Launched as a free concert series included with fair admission, the Free Stage has grown in stature. Recent lineups have drawn blues legends and mainstream acts—building community and closing the Fair with live music tradition
