State Department of Revenue Cracks Down on “Tax Zapper” Software
STATEWIDE — Tax zapper computer software, essentially eliminates sales transactions from a businesses records, while that business still pockets the money made. The state Department of Revenue has a little problem with that.
“It is a piece of software that is installed on ‘point of sale’ systems,” said Bob Grennes, Chief Operating Officer of the department. “It does a number of things. One of them is that it will eliminate their reporting for income and sales tax purposes.”
Grennes said that causes the state to lose money.
“It’s usually a portion that the software takes out,” Grennes continued. “For example, if you did 100 transactions in a day, your business records might show 80.”
Grennes said sinister characters approach businesses with the software and it is also available through the dark web. He said they haven’t found any businesses in Indiana using the software yet, but they are being proactive through a new initiative to keep businesses away from it.
Grennes warns the penalty for getting caught with the software could range from a fine to a loss of your license to operate a business in Indiana, not to mention jail time.
