NWS: Severe Storms Expected in Indiana

STATEWIDE — On and off thunderstorms are likely in the afternoon through early evening hours.
Matt Eckhoff, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis has the details about the severe threats that may happen in Indiana.
“Between 3 and 9 p.m., it looks most favorable for thunderstorms, at least in Indianapolis,” Eckhoff says. “Rain and thunder could continue into tonight. It most likely ends around the state sometime between midnight to 2 a.m.”
Eckhoff says parts across southern Indiana are most likely to experience threats for tornadoes at this time.
“There is a tornado threat for all of Indiana today, but the highest likelihood of tornadoes currently exists across the southern portions of the state. From Bloomington southward has the highest chances of seeing a tornado,” Eckhoff says.
Eckhoff says tornadoes and thunderstorms could happen anywhere today, however. He also says Northern Indiana’s biggest concern is thunderstorms that produce straight-line winds with potentially large hail.
Very heavy rain is likely this week heading into the weekend. According to Eckhoff, heavy rain is likely to happen Wednesday.
“There could be a couple of inches of rain, and that could lead to localized flooding or even widespread flooding, especially if you are further south, closer to the Ohio River,” Eckhoff says.
Eckhoff says there is a lot to pay attention to, and it doesn’t mean the weather is done with you.
Monday’s temperatures contain highs in the 40’s, then they will rise as the work week goes on. Eckhoff says as soon as Wednesday approaches, that’s when temperatures start to feel warm again.
“Highs are back in the 70’s on Wednesday. There are storm systems coming through with each one bringing winds ahead of it, so that brings up the warm air,” Eckhoff says. “Then, the cold front comes through, and that brings back the cold air.”
