INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana State Police are investigating a chase that ended in a crash on Indy’s east side early Wednesday.
Police say the driver of a stolen car tried to outrun an officer but crashed into another vehicle on East 21st Street near Shadeland Avenue.
Sergeant John Perrine says he’s unsure why people ignore police orders, but officers must balance the need to arrest criminals with the safety risks of a chase.
“We can’t just sit back and let criminals—people who disregard others’ safety—get away,” he said.
The two people in the car were quickly caught and taken to the hospital for treatment. Police say they found a rifle, drugs, and a gun with a Glock switch in the stolen car, which Perrine calls a dangerous, illegally made device.
“Essentially, it turns a Glock handgun from a semi-automatic, one shot per trigger pull, into a fully automatic weapon,” he added.
Perrine says a 15-year-old was the one with the machine gun conversion device. He encourages those interested in how state police decide whether to engage in a car chase to visit the Indiana State Police website.
