Indy Winter Weather

INDIANAPOLIS — If you’re traveling for Thanksgiving, prepare for a wintry mix on the roads—especially in Northern Indiana, where up to an inch of snow is possible. Elsewhere, rain is more likely.

Bundle up! By the weekend, an arctic blast will plunge temperatures into the teens and single digits across Indiana. With snow and rain in the forecast, you might wonder if road conditions will get tricky—but forecasters say that’s unlikely.

“The best chance for snow will be north and east of Indianapolis. Areas south of I-70 are likely to stay too warm,” says Matt Eckhoff, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

La Niña signals a colder, wetter winter, but that doesn’t necessarily mean more snow. Forecasters predict a chilly start to December with plenty of precipitation, and they’ve updated their forecast for Indianapolis, including the chance of snow early Saturday.

“The pattern we’re going to experience is one with northwesterly flow from Canada,” Eckhoff explains. “That favors cooler temperatures, and the air from that direction is typically dry.”

“The chance of snow over the weekend has trended downward,” he adds. “There’s still a very slight chance of precipitation, especially in southern Indiana, about 40 percent.
