WHITELAND, IND — The Whiteland Police Department arrested Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Officer Herman Means for domestic battery on Tuesday after responding to a domestic violence report at his home. Officers found probable cause for his arrest.
Means faces preliminary charges of domestic battery and strangulation. The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will decide on final charges.
When authorities learned that an off-duty IMPD officer was involved, they contacted IMPD’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) to assist with the investigation, if needed.
Means, a seven-year veteran assigned to the East District, is being held in the Johnson County Jail. He will be placed on administrative leave pending an internal review, and his department-issued equipment has been confiscated. His police authority has also been suspended.
IMPD’s Internal Affairs will conduct an administrative investigation and present the findings to the Chief of Police.
Means is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
