HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind.–A driver in Hancock County was arrested Tuesday for going 110 mph in a construction zone.

The speed limit in that zone is 55 mph. State Police Sergeant John Perrine said Wednesday morning that the man is facing charges not only for reckless driving, but for other citations as well.

“To see somebody driving so recklessly and egregiously through a construction zone is heartbreaking and we’re thankful that we were there at the right time to hold him accountable,” said Perrine.

They believe he was driving a Dodge Charger. No one was hurt. Perrine said the driver put so many more people in harm’s way besides just himself.

“He not only put his life in danger, but he also put so many other lives in danger such as other workers and first responders. It’s just reckless,” said Perrine.

Perrine said the legal system moved quickly on this one. The man was already back in court Wednesday morning.

“Once he pled guilty, they put him in jail for 20 days,” said Perrine.

Indiana’s Work Zone Safety Law created penalties for traffic violations that occur in or around construction areas. It calls for a $300 fine for the first violation, which increases to $1,000 for a third violation within three years.

People convicted of driving recklessly in a work zone could be sentenced to six years in prison and be fined $10,000, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.
