HAMMOND, Ind. – A doctor from Crown Point, Indiana has been sentenced to more than 12 months in prison for health care fraud.
Court documents claim that 60-year-old Johann Farley was a physician who ran an addiction treatment practice in Merrillville, Indiana. Several of his patients struggled with opioid addictions and relied on him for treatment.
Farley would bring patients to his office frequently, sometimes on a daily basis. Visits would last for only a few minutes, and in some instances, patience did not actually meet with him.
Farley would then submit claims to Medicaid and Medicare lying about how extensive the visits to his practice actually were. In total, between January 2016 and May 2020, Farley billed Medicaid and Medicare for more than 7,000 services that he did not actually provide. As a result, he was paid more than $557,000 for work he never did.
Farley was sentenced to 12 months and 1 day in prison followed by a year of supervised release. He also has to pay back the money he stole from Indiana Medicaid and Medicare, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
