Severe weather in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS – Severe weather is in the forecast this weekend, with a mix of threats possible. Forecasters say this has already been an active severe weather season.

“The Storm Prediction Center has been highlighting Sunday as a severe weather day for a couple of days now,” said Cody Moore with the National Weather Service. “Confidence is increasing that we will see severe storms.”

Visibility was an issue earlier this morning, and some areas may see school delays through sunrise. Moore said strong wind gusts are expected ahead of Sunday’s storms.

“Our forecast shows gusts up to 20 miles an hour, but that could increase. When strong storms and fronts move in, we typically see higher winds ahead of them.”

Rain chances today are low, with only scattered showers and some sunshine breaking through at times. Clouds will dominate, keeping highs in the low 50s.

By Thursday afternoon and evening, steady rain will develop. Heavier showers will move in early Friday as a warm front lifts through, making for a wet start to the day. Drier conditions are expected by Friday afternoon, with highs reaching the 70s.

More showers return this weekend, especially late Saturday into Sunday.

“We’re already well into severe weather season,” Moore added. “We’ve seen quite a bit of severe weather this month, and that pattern looks to continue, especially with Sunday’s storms.”
