INDIANAPOLIS –The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has issued notices to 28,000 drivers who were caught speeding in a construction zone on the northeast side. This is part of INDOT’s Safe Zone program, which aims to enhance safety in work zones.

Speed cameras along I-465 and I-69 monitor vehicles, and drivers exceeding the 45 mph speed limit by 11 mph or more will receive a notice.

Currently in its “pre-enforcement” phase, the program is designed to encourage drivers to slow down rather than immediately issue fines. This phase will continue until spring, with a set enforcement date to be announced.

The system captures an image of a vehicle’s rear license plate when speeding is detected. After validation, a violation notice will be sent to the vehicle’s owner.

Once enforcement begins, drivers will receive a warning for the first violation, a $75 fine for the second, and $150 for any further violations.

Fines collected will go into the state’s General Fund. Violations are only valid when workers are present at the site during the incident.
