INDIANAPOLIS — Back in 1994, Kofi Ajabu was found guilty of playing a role in the murder of three people.

The jury found he and Raymond Adams both guilty of the murders and both were given life sentences. However, the loved ones of Ajabu are pushing to appeal to Gov. Eric Holcomb for clemency in the case.

“Never once did I believe my child had committed the murders,” said Jane Ajabu, Kofi’s mother. “Yes, he was there. And yes, there should be some kind of accountability, but I firmly believe he did not cause anybody harm.”

The request for clemency is being anchored by Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN-7th) as well as the man who served as the foreman of the jury that convicted him. Orvan Mabie is now coming out and saying that he had to find him guilty “because of the way the Indiana law was written.”

“The forensic experts had found a footprint in the basement of where the girl was murdered,” Mabie said. “The shoe size matched that Adams, and not Kofi. I truly believe that Raymond Adams did all three killings.”

Ajabu has now been in prison for 30 years with no possibility of parole. He was sentenced to 240 years for the murders, even though his advocates say he did not play a direct role in the murders.

“I believe Kofi was an unwilling participant. He was a young, stupid kid and he has paid dearly for his mistakes,” Mabie added.

Mabie said the decision to find Ajabu guilty has haunted him in that time span, and he has made it his life purpose to help KofiĀ get clemency.
