\INDIANAPOLIS — President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to cut federal spending could affect Indiana. The newly announced Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) aims to team up with Republicans to slash federal regulations and reduce spending, potentially through executive actions or the budget process.
U.S. Rep. André Carson, a Democrat from Indiana, tells WISH-TV, “I’m all for government efficiency, but we can improve it without cutting programs Hoosiers rely on.”
Over the past two years, Carson and fellow Indiana Democrat U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan have secured nearly $60 million in federal funds for the state through Community Project Funding. These funds, once known as earmarks, directly support local projects.
In 2023, Carson helped secure $5 million for the Indianapolis Airport Master Plan, $5 million for downtown Market Street reconstruction, and $1 million for job training at RecycleForce.
Carson expressed concern these funds could be targeted for cuts. “The role of government is to provide services and a social safety net,” he said. “We shouldn’t balance the budget on the backs of everyday Americans and Hoosiers.”
