INDIANAPOLIS –Hoosiers woke up to their first snowfall of the season Thursday. Another round of snow is expected this afternoon, just as a Winter Weather Advisory kicks in.

“We issue the Winter Weather Advisory to notify people that there could be some travel problems,” said Randy Bowers, a forecaster at the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. “In this case, not widespread travel problems but just enough potential for accumulation.”

Temperatures have dropped sharply over the last 24 hours. It was near freezing earlier today, with the wind making it feel like it was in the teens.

“We’re quite a bit colder than we have been the last several days; we’ve had a long stretch of above-normal temperatures that’s come to an end now.”

Bridges and overpasses could get slick this afternoon as a strong band of snow moves in from Chicago. Some areas in Indiana could see 1 to 3 inches of snow.

“As we go through the late afternoon and into the early evening, and the snow continues, that’s when we could see slick spots,” Bowers said. “Be careful not to underestimate the road conditions.”

The second round of snow is expected to hit Central Indiana around 2 p.m., bringing 1 to 3 inches to areas like Terre Haute, Vincennes, Lafayette, and Muncie. Once the snow moves out tonight, totals could reach up to 3 inches in some spots. A winter weather advisory begins at 4 p.m. today.
