INDIANAPOLIS — “We are not going back” has become the rallying cry for the Harris campaign for president, and the Vice-President made that clear during her visit to Indianapolis Wednesday.
“These extremists want to take us back, but we are not going back. We are not going back,” said Vice-President Kamala Harris during her speech at the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority event at the Indiana Convention Center.
The trip to Indianapolis was originally supposed to be similar to last year’s visit, in which Harris spoke on issues challenging Black voters. After President Joe Biden announced his decision to step out of the 2024 presidential race Sunday, Harris’ speech in Indianapolis became similar to a campaign event in which she laid out the vision for what a Harris presidency could look like.
“Well, let me tell you something,” Harris said Wednesday, “when I am President of the United States, and when Congress passes a law to restore those (women’s reproductive) freedoms, I will sign it into law.”
Harris said the Trump administration’s appointment of conservative United States Supreme Court justices was always a plot to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate a women’s choice in the United States. She explained reproductive rights will remain a top priority, just as it has with the Biden administration. Harris also denounced the conservative policy platform called “Project 2025” and embrace her vision for strengthening the country’s working class and cutting child poverty.
Harris said November presents two clear visions for the U.S., “one focused on the future and the other focused on the past.”
She also praised President Biden’s political record, which drew loud cheers from thousands of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority event attendees.
Security was especially thorough and controlled before Harris’ arrival, which was to be expected after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump back on July 13th. That security failure led to the resignation of Kimberly Cheatle as Secret Service Director.
One issue that still remains unsolved is who will be Kamala Harris’ running mate. One of the top names floated by Democrats thus far is former South Bend mayor and current Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
