INDIANAPOLIS — Five fire departments were battling a fire Friday afternoon at a recycling center on the city’s west side.

The fire was reported about 2:46 p.m. Friday at the Omni Source recycling plant at 2205 S. Holt Road. That’s just northeast of the I-70 interchange for the Sam Jones Expressway.

Smoke rose from the area and was visible from I-70 near I-465. In addition to the smoke, high winds and low water pressure made firefighting efforts more difficult, according to the Wayne Township Fire Department.

Three hours in, residents living near the scrap-metal fire were asked to “shelter in place” and turn off their ventilation systems. According to the Wayne Township Fire Department, this was due to “large volumes of smoke” which created a plume that stretched for two miles.

By 10 p.m., the “shelter in place” order was lifted, and the fire had been marked “under control.” Fire department operations were completed around 3:30 a.m. Saturday — nearly 13 hours later.

The fire is believed to be accidental. No injuries have been reported.
