STATEWIDE – Hoosier drivers are getting a new way to personalize their vehicles while also contributing to better state services. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) officially unveiled its new “blackout plates” this week, set to be available for purchase starting August 8th.

These sleek, minimalist license plates feature a black background with stark white lettering, offering a popular design seen in several other states. Approved by state lawmakers during the last legislative session, the plates are designed to provide a more expressive option for drivers.

Beyond aesthetics, the “blackout plates” serve a crucial funding purpose. Revenue generated from the new plates, which carry an annual fee of $45 (with an additional $45 for personalized options), is specifically earmarked to enhance BMV services.

The plates will be available for most passenger cars, light trucks under 11,000 pounds, motorcycles, and RVs. A disability-accessible version is planned for a later release.

Hoosiers can purchase their new “blackout plates” at BMV locations, through the BMV website (myBMV.com), or at BMV Connect kiosks. Officials urge the public to only acquire plates through official BMV channels to avoid third-party scams.
