ZIONSVILLE, Ind. — Current Indiana State Comptroller Elise Nieshalla announced her campaign to seek her first full term in that role.

Nieshalla said she wants to build on Indiana’s strong financial foundation. She describes herself as “a proven conservative leader, fiscal policy expert, and successful entrepreneur.”

“Indiana is a model of fiscal responsibility with strong reserves, a AAA credit rating, balanced budget and one of the lowest debt levels in the country. We’re showing what responsible government looks like—and I will fight every day to protect that standard,” Nieshalla said.

As Indiana’s State Comptroller, Nieshalla is responsible for the accounting and reporting of all the state’s money. Her office also handles payroll, pays the state’s bills and distributes the taxes that are collected on behalf of local units.

“We’re talking counties, cities, towns and school districts that we make sure we get that money back to them so they can put that money to good work for Hoosiers,” said Nieshalla.

Nieshalla is also nationally recognized for her leadership of the National Debt Crisis Task Force of state financial officers. The work centers around getting state leaders to support Congress and President Trump to confront the country’s growing federal debt.

“We need to make America’s finances like Indiana’s,” Nieshalla added.

Some of the top priorities Nieshalla has listed in a potential second term include:

● Upholding conservative values and an America First agenda by defending life, liberty, free enterprise, and self-defense

● Ending investments in Communist China and ESG funds that undermine American values and fiduciary duty

● Making state government more efficient through technology and streamlined systems

“Serving Hoosiers as State Comptroller is an honor,” Nieshalla said. “I’m committed to continuing our nationally recognized financial reporting and transparency for one of the brightest economic beacons in America – the State of Indiana.”

Nieshalla lost the race for election for Indiana Treasurer in June 2022. Former Gov. Eric Holcomb then appointed Nieshalla as Indiana State Comptroller, replacing Tera Klutz in December of 2023. Her current term ends on January 1, 2027 so the campaign process will begin for the 2026 election.

Nieshalla previously served as president of the Indiana County Councils Association and the Boone County Council. She is also founder of the Hoosier Leadership Series and a former adjunct instructor for Indiana University’s O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
